Former Western Bulldogs midfielder Scott West has joined Melbourne as an assistant coach.

The 34-year-old retired from the Bulldogs last season because of a chronic knee injury.

West joins the club in a part-time capacity, assisting Mark Williams with the team's midfield.

"We are really excited to have Scott join the club to assist and develop our younger players," coach Dean Bailey said in a statement.

"His record as a player absolutely speaks for itself, and he brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in the stoppage area of the game.

"It's going to be a fantastic experience for our young players to learn from a true champion player, who is fresh out of the game."

West said he was looking forward to a new challenge after a stellar 324-game career for the Bulldogs which featured seven club best and fairest awards.

"This is a great opportunity for me to further my coaching credentials, and I'm certainly looking forward to working with what is a young and developing playing list," he said.
