Backflip: trout hatchery to remain open

Posted November 21, 2008 13:43:00

The New South Wales Government has reversed its mini-budget decision to close a trout hatchery at Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains, in the face of strong opposition from one of its own MPs.

The Gaden Trout Hatchery at Jindabyne was set be closed as part of mini-budget savings measures.

That prompted an angry response from Member for Monaro Steve Whan who last weekend led a protest against the decision.

This morning he met with Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald who has now put off the closure of the trout hatchery.

Mr Whan says logic has won out.

"It's never easy when you have got to campaign against your own Government, but as a local member that is something that on occasion you need to do," he said.

He says he is hopeful a solution can be found that will see existing staff retained and the hatchery remain in government hands.
