Coal mine plan labelled vandalism

Posted July 30, 2010 14:21:00

Margaret River residents say proposed coal mining near the town will ruin its tourism industry.

LD Operations has approached the Western Australian Government, wanting to establish an underground coal mine 15 kilometres from the town centre.

The company says it already operates similar operations in the eastern states and can run the mine safely.

But local resident Peter Lane says coal mining severely impacts upon wine and food producers who attract tourists to the area.

"The wider concern isn't just the environmental, it changes the culture of an area," he said.

"People have come down here because of the beauty of the area and to stick one of the dirtiest industries in the world in the middle of it is vandalism."
