The New South Wales police riot squad was called to a restaurant in Sydney's CBD this morning, to help break up a brawl that involved up to 100 people.

The police were called to the Bavarian licensed restaurant in The Rocks around 2:30am, after they received reports people were fighting both inside and outside of the building.

Police say while people were fighting on the street, another brawl broke out inside the venue as attempts were made to remove some patrons.

A police officer was hurt in the fight and has been treated in hospital for facial injuries.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a police officer and two counts of resisting arrest.

He will face court later this month.

Police detained seven other men during the brawl, but they have since been released.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
