Pakistan president refuses to cancel UK trip

Posted August 1, 2010 16:48:00

Pakistan's president has refused to cancel a trip to Britain despite heightened diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

On Thursday British prime minister David Cameron caused controversy by suggesting that some Pakistani officials support the Taliban.

Politicians in Pakistan have urged Asif Ali Zardari to call off his tour of Europe and the UK this week in protest of the remarks.

But Pakistan's information minister, Qamar Zaman Kaira, says Mr Zardari will use the trip to "set the record straight".

"We'll give the details and as I think the other powers of the world, they believe that Pakistan stands and Pakistan's activity in the war on terror, they're sacrifices are tremendous and they are agreed with our position," Mr Kaira said.

"We hope so that the new management, the new leadership [in the UK], when they will get the exact picture they will agree with us."
