FLOOD ADVICE FOR COOPER, STRZELECKI AND WARBURTON CREEKS Issued at 12:50 pm on Thursday, 11 March 2010
1. FLOOD ADVICE : COOPER CREEK SYSTEM The Cooper Creek at Nappa Merri, Qld, has risen over a metre in the 24 hours to 9 am, 11th March. At 8 am on Thursday, 11th March a level of 7.5 m was recorded. This is the highest level since May 1990. The level at Nappa Merri is expected to reach 8 m over the weekend [13th/14th March].
A level of 8.45 metres was recorded at Cullyamurra Waterhole at 7 am, Thursday, 11th of March. This is a rise of 2 metres in 24 hours.
Local sources estimated the level at the Innamincka causeway to be 8.6 metres at around 9 am Thursday morning. Water is flowing in the Strzelecki Creek. It is expected that the river will rise above 10 metres during the weekend. Levels are expected to remain high throughout coming week.
DIAMANTINA-WARBURTON SYSTEM The Diamantina River at Birdsville remains at moderate flood levels. A height of 7.8 metres was reported for 11 am, Thursday, 11th March. The river is expected to remain at moderate flood levels over the coming days. Flows through to the Warburton River in South Australia continue.
Travellers to the region are reminded to take care at all creek crossings and to seek information on road and track conditions from the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure at http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/quicklinks/northern_roads/northern.asp.
2. RIVER HEIGHT OBSERVATIONS : For the latest river heights refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/qld/west.shtml The next Flood Advice will be issued by 4 pm Friday 12 March 2010.
