Partnering the Poor
How much are we Australian's prepared to commit ourselves to the welfare of others? For years churches and charities have argued that looking after others includes not just a hand out but a hand up. One of the agencies that promotes a global view on our duty to offer a hand up, is TEAR Australia. Tim Trudgen is based in Galiwin'ku, North East Arnhem Land, NT, working with the Yolngu people. Barbara Deutschmann is a long term senior TEAR staff member and a theologian, with particular interest in gender issues. C.B. Samuel is a Pastor, theologian and CEO of an Indian development agency.

Sunday Nights Talkback

The 'Great' debate reviewed

"Well, how did you score it" is the predominant question across the country tonight. 'Not a knockout to either side', seems to be the general verdict. Lurking below is perhaps a general distaste for both sides. Tony Abbot fudges work choices, Julia Gillard fudges climate, and both seek to manipulate the soft underbelly of Australia on immigration and population.
Is this one of those elections in which voluntary voting, if it were to be permitted in Australia, would declare a plague on both their houses? What do you think?

Fr Donald Cozzens and Dr Michael Whelan on the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church

The world is watching the Catholic Church's public agony over clergy sexual abuse. Last week the National Council of Priests of Australia invited one of the church's most widely read commentators on the issue, American priest, Fr. Donald Cozzens author of a number of books including 'The Changing Face of the Priesthood', to speak to them, and a rather intense session it proved to be. Tonight, Donald Cozzens joins us together with Australian priest Michael Whelan, to assess the temperature of the debate both in Australia and internationally.

The Goodlife, Daoism and Soul-Power

Master Sha (as he is called by his followers) presents a deeply Chinese approach to the good Life- his unique method of acquiring health and well-being. One of his books on this subject became a New York best Seller, and he now runs the Institute of Soul Healing and Enlightenment. While the roots of his basically Daoist belief system are very ancient, Dr Sha is a modern phenomenon. While he has qualified as a Western medical doctor, he also has extensive knowledge of Chinese traditional medicine, and has developed a new system of his own- based 'soul singing'. These are mantras he teaches that he says will improve health and wellbeing. It may not surprise you that Hasidic Judaism teaches a somewhat similar approach to the healing nature of sound.
